An Elk Grove, California restaurant has been vandalized with hate speech. The Umai Bar and Grill located on 8973 Grant Line Road was spray-painted with “F**K Gook” on the front of the restaurant.
“It makes us a little more afraid,” the owner of Umai Bar and Grill, Feng Liang told CBS Sacramento. “It did hurt but we’re not going to let that get to us.”
According to CBS Sacramento, someone spray-painted the restaurant on Thursday morning around 5 am. Police said surveillance video caught one man vandalizing the store. The police identified the suspect and arrested 43-year-old Lahn Hansen. Police said they found evidence linking Hansen to the crime in his vehicle in addition to narcotics and burglary tools.
Umai Bar and Grill was quickly cleaned up and back in business with the help of the community.
“All of them came out and helped us clean,” Liang said. “We’re very thankful for all of them.”
Elk Grove Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen told Elk Grove Laguna Forums that racism will not be tolerated and to support the restaurant by ordering a meal from them.
“What happened to Umai Bar and Grill and the racist message that was used is absolutely unacceptable and will not be tolerated in our city. While police is investigating, it was very important to me to stop by the restaurant to share my empathy and support with the owners on behalf of our Elk Grove community.
“I want to encourage all residents to show their support and condemn this attack by ordering your next meal from them. Let’s unite and say no to hateful attacks like this”
