The NYPD arrested 24-year-old Christian Batista on Monday for allegedly sucker-punching a 75-year-old woman in Queens, New York last month on May 26th, reports ABC New York News. The victim was walking on 57th and 97th Place in Corona when a male walked by her and decked her in the face causing her to collapse to the ground. The incident was caught on surveillance video.
The victim was taken to Elmhurst Hospital suffering from a fractured orbital bone and nose.
“She was just coming back from the supermarket and she had her shopping cart,” the victim’s son told CBS News New York. “…It’s kind of obvious he punched her because she was an Asian lady.”
The son said bystanders aided his mother and called the ambulance.
“She said people around were nice enough to help her call the ambulance,” he said. “They came to pick her up and stuff like that, so I’m glad people around here at least stick up for each other.”
The victim will need to return to the hospital for surgery.
Christian Batista was charged with assault in the second and third degree.
