Suni Lee said she was pepper-sprayed in racist attack

Gold USA Olympic gymnast Suni Lee said she was the victim of a racist attack in Los Angeles. In an interview with PopSugar, the 18-year-old recalled the time she was pepper-sprayed and called “ching chong.” She was waiting for an Uber after a night out with her friends when a group in a car yelled” ching chong” and told them to “go back to where they came from.” One of the passengers then pepper-sprayed Lee’s arm.

“I was so mad, but there was nothing I could do or control because they skirted off,” she recalled. “I didn’t do anything to them, and having the reputation, it’s so hard because I didn’t want to do anything that could get me into trouble. I just let it happen.”

Suni Lee is of Hmong descent from Minnesota. She rocketed to fame after she won Gold in the women’s all-around gymnastics competition in Tokyo earlier this year after Simone Biles dropped out. With the fame, she became the latest celebrity to appear on Dancing with the Stars.
