Philadelphia police arrest alleged suspect who struck Asian woman

Update – According to CBS Philadelphia News, the suspect has been identified as 30-year-old Alex White. He has been charged with simple assault and recklessly endangering another person.

Surveillance video caught a man striking an Asian woman in her face in Center City in Philadelphia. The video shows two women walking down the street and the assailant walking in their direction. As they pass each other the man just smacks one of the women in the face before walking off.

According to 6 ABC, the incident occurred on Easter Sunday around 2 pm. The two women were walking down 11th and Filbert streets when the 27-year-old Asian woman was assaulted.

The man whose surveillance camera caught the incident said he “heard this eerie scream.” He then heard her crying outside his office.

“I could hear it was constant kind of like a cry,” he said. “So I looked up at my camera. On Easter Sunday, nobody expects to have your head almost taken off by a smack.”

The man’s other surveillance camera also caught the police arrest the man just a block away on 11th and Arch streets.

The victim was transported to the Jefferson University Hospital by ambulance where she is in stable condition.

Police said the assailant is a homeless man and ruled that the assault was a random attack and not a hate crime.
