Philadelphia check-cashing store owner shot dead

A 67-year-old Philadelphia check-cashing store owner was shot dead in a robbery on Tuesday afternoon. According to Fox 29, Aruna Mittal was shot dead inside her Any Check Cashed store in Ogontz. Police said the suspect followed Mittal inside the store after she returned to her business around 1 pm and forced himself past the security door. A struggle ensued and he shot her in the chest, according to investigators. The suspect then fled the scene after taking an undetermined amount of money.

Police said they arrested a suspect but he will remain unnamed until he is formally charged.

Aruna Mittal’s oldest son told NBC Philadelphia News, his parents immigrated from India years ago and built a life together here.

“She has seven grandchildren,” Unkur Mittal said. “She was a wonderful mother who worked day and night. Never arguesI’m upset that it happened because a tragic loss is a tragic loss and I’m frustrated that in this city, it’s another homicide and nothing has been done and nothing will be done.”
