Person of interest in Oakland, Chinatown attacks in custody

The Oakland, California police department has in custody a person who is suspected in a string of attacks in the Chinatown area. Surveillance video showed one of the attacks where a masked hooded assailant violently pushed a 91-year-old Asian man causing the victim to crash into the ground. The video went viral drawing massive outrage and a cash reward from Daniel Dae Kim and Daniel Wu for any information leading to the arrest of the suspect. Police did not name the person of interest but some sources told KTVU, the suspect is 28-year-old Yahya Muslim. The suspect was already in custody for an unrelated elder abuse case.

“The investigation is in its early stages,” Oakland police said. “Investigators are working hard to forward this case to the DA’s office for review and charging.”

The attacks occurred on January 31st around 8th and Harrison in Chinatown. The suspect allegedly pushed two other victims, a 55-year-old and a 60-year-old, from behind after the first victim. All three victims were treated for their injuries.

UPDATE – 2/8/21 – According to CBS San Francisco, Yahya Muslim has been arrested and “charged with assault, battery, elder abuse, and a special allegation of offenses while out on bail” for the string of attacks in Oakland, Chinatown. He was already in custody the day after he allegedly assaulted the three people on another unrelated charge.

There has been a growing number of crimes against Asian elders in the Bay area. Just before this case, an 84-year-old Thai man named Vicha Ratanapakdee was out on his daily walk around the Anza Vista neighborhood in San Francisco when an assailant ran across the street and slammed into him. Vicha crashed to the ground and died a couple of days later from the injuries he sustained from the incident.

Police arrested Antoine Watson and charged him with murder and elder abuse. He pleaded not guilty.
