The Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce, Carl Chan was assaulted on Thursday on 8th and Broadway, reports Kron 4 News. Chan said he was walking when a man came up from behind him and struck him in the head causing him to fall to the ground. According to ABC 7 News, Chan said the man yelled a slur before assaulting him.
The suspect walked away but Chan was able to take photos of the suspect. After police arrived, Chan provided a description and an arrest was made.
“In one way, I have to say that I got lucky,” Chan told ABC 7 News. “But I don’t want to see this happening over and over again, and not only about me. I don’t want to see this happening to any seniors.”
Before he was attacked, Chan was on his way to the hospital to visit an elderly Asian man who was also attacked in Oakland. Mr. Lin was attacked on the bus on Monday.
Carl Chan has been an advocate for the Oakland, Chinatown area since the rise in crimes in the neighborhood.
