Police arrested a 36-year-old mother living in New Jersey for allegedly murdering her two children, reports CBS New York. Yuhwei Chou made her first court appearance today after she underwent a mental evaluation. She faces two murder charges for the death of her 7-year-old daughter Samantha Ross and 10-year-old son Paul Ross.
On Tuesday, a tow truck driver spotted a car in a ditch in Montgomery Township about 10 miles north of Yuhwei’s house. Yuhwei was behind the wheel with her two kids in the back.
“He just said he found a lady in the ditch and he said he asked her if she was alright. She said no, I think, and then he [saw] the babies. Then he called the cops right away,” the tow truck driver’s father told CBS New York.
When police arrived at the scene they found the kids “bound and restrained” in the booster seat and baby seat with no signs of life, reports People.
“No vital signs were present on the children and they were pronounced deceased at the scene,” the prosecutor’s office said.
Tests confirmed the two kids were Yuhwei’s biological kids and an “investigation has revealed that Yuhwei Chou caused the deaths of her two children,” according to Somerset County Prosecutor Michael H. Robertson.
A motive has not been established and “circumstances leading to the events which caused the deaths of the two children are under investigation by authorities.”
