Marvel looking at Ludi Lin and Donnie Yen for Shang-Chi roles

Ever since it was announced that Marvel would be making Shang-Chi, every Asian male has been slobbering for the part. There have been tons of rumors on who would play the star-making role including Steven Yeun, but no official word yet. So another day, another rumor. According to a source for That Hashtag Show, Ludi Lin is in the front running to land the lead role in Shang-Chi. Furthermore, they are claiming that Marvel is hoping Donnie Yen jumps aboard the movie.

Ludi Lin is a Chinese actor who is best known for his role as the Black Power Ranger in the 2017 Power Ranger reboot. If cast in Shang-Chi, this would make Lin part of two superhero universes. He played a side character named Murk in DC’s Aquaman in 2018, however, for Shang-Chi he would be up and center as the main protagonist. Lin would be perfect for Shang-Chi as he is proficient in martial arts. As for Ludi Lin, he stated before that he would love to play Shang-Chi when news came out that Marvel greenlit the movie.

“It’s definitely something I want to do,” Lin told ScreenRant during his Aquaman press run. “To do an Asian-centric superhero. To tell that story. I mean ideally, I’d like to design my own superhero, make my own creation. But I think the Marvel world is pretty incredible as well.

“Especially in honor of Stan Lee, the person who created this entire, I mean like an entire universe. You know what I mean? It’s pretty incredible. And I think it would be great because it would take another big step towards representation.”

Donnie Yen is a legend in Hong Kong cinema. He is best known for his starring role in the Ip Man movies. If the 55-year-old is cast, he would play a “wise old statesman” or possibly even Shang-Chi’s dad.

Marvel Studios has already hired David Callaham to pen the script and Destin Cretton to direct the movie. The movie is expected to open on February 21, 2021, coinciding with the Chinese-Lunar New Year.
