Workers in India at Wistron Corporation, an iPhone manufacturing company, went on a rampage over their inadequate salaries. According to the Times Of India, the riot occurred in Bengaluru, Narasapura, India with nearly 2,000 employees participating in the riot on Saturday. The workers finished their night shift and went on to destroy the building and cars and stole thousands of iPhones.
The riot started over disputed wages. Wistron Corporation, who’s headquartered in Taiwan, allegedly promised one wage but the employees got a much lower wage. On Friday, the employees started discussing their salaries on the floor and they were not happy.
“While an engineering graduate was promised Rs 21,000 per month, his/her salary had reduced to Rs 16,000 and, subsequently, to Rs 12,000 in recent months,” one employee said. “Non engineering graduates’ monthly salary had reduced to Rs 8,000. The salary amount being credited to our accounts have been reducing and it was frustrating to see this.”
Wistron Corporation did not release a statement regarding the incident. However, The 8-bit is reporting that Wistron hired six local subsidiaries to hire 8,900 employees for the plant and the riot was due to miscommunication between Wistron, the employees, and the labor subsidiaries.
“What we hear is that the company had made payments to the labor contractors, who delayed payments to the employees,” Karnataka Labour Minister Shivaram Hebbar said. “This is being verified.”
Around $59 million in losses occured due to the damage to the property and the stolen iPhones. 160 people were arrested in connection to the riot.
