26-year-old Mat George was killed on July 17th in Los Angeles, California after he was struck by a car that fled the scene, reports NBC News. George hosted a podcast called “She Rates Dogs” with Michaela Okland who broke the news on Twitter.
“I would rather you guys here this from me than a news article,” she tweeted. “Mat was killed in a hit and run last night. I don’t really have any other words right now. I wish I could contact everybody who knows him personally but the news is already out and I just can’t do it right now.”
Although Mat George was not named by the LAPD, they did confirm that a pedestrian was killed in a hit and run on Saturday around 2:20 am. George was walking southbound on Croft Avenue in an unmarked crosswalk when he was struck by a white BMW traveling East on Beverly Boulevard, reports Buzzfeed News. The BMW then fled the scene without rendering aid or identifying himself.
Paramedics arrived at the scene and rendered aid but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
“The driver of the white BMW continued driving eastbound failing to stop, render aid, and/or identify themselves as required by California law,” LAPD said in a statement. “Paramedics of the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the scene and provided medical treatment to the pedestrian. Unfortunately, the pedestrian succumbed to the injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.”
Over the weekend, news of George’s death broke out causing an outpouring of love from the comedy community.
George didn’t mention his Indian ethnicity much but he did sprinkle it in his tweets occasionally.
According to Michaela Okland there is one last episode of “She Rates Dog” with George but at this time she said she’s holding off on releasing it.
Police are looking for the driver and a $50,000 reward has been put up for any information leading to the driver’s arrest.
