A Fullerton man has been arrested for allegedly throwing rocks at an Asian woman’s car last month. According to NBC News, police arrested 28-year-old Roger Janke who allegedly told them “Koreans in the area were trying to control him.”
The incident occurred on March 31st around 1 pm near Hughes Drive and Bastanchury Road in Fullerton, California. The DA’s office said the 38-year-old Asian woman was driving her Tesla with her 6-year-old son in the car when Janke allegedly hurled two rocks at her car. The rocks cracked the woman’s windshield and damaged the bumper. The woman parked in a nearby park and called 911.
“I refuse to tolerate hate in Orange County,” Todd Spitzer, the Orange County District Attorney said. “A woman and her child should be able to drive down the street without worrying about being attacked because of the color of their skin. Our commitment to continuing to prosecute hate crimes to the fullest extent of the law is sending a strong message to all the haters out there – there is no room for hate here – or anywhere.”
Roger Janke was charged with “one felony count of violation of civil rights, one felony count of vandalism, one misdemeanor count of throwing a substance at a vehicle, and one felony hate crime enhancement,” according to the statement released by the DA’s office.
Janke is currently in jail on $51,500 bail at the Theo Lacy Facility. He has pled not guilty but if found guilty of all charges he faces a maximum of six years and six months in prison.
