Filipino actress Liza Soberano threatened with death by Philippine Army official

One of the most popular actors in the Philippines has been threatened by a Philippine Army official. According to Rappler, Liza Soberano spoke as a celebrity guest at an event hosted by left-leaning women’s group Gabriela Youth. Gabriela asks its participants to talk about women’s rights. In an online event, Soberano encouraged women to speak up about violence against women and children.

This caused people to accuse Soberano of being involved with the New People’s Army, the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines. Lt. General Antonio Parlade Jr. who often accuses people of being communists threatened Soberano with death.

“Liza Soberano, there’s still a chance to abdicate that group,” Parlade said. “If you don’t, you will suffer the same fate as Josephine Anne Lapira.”

Lapira was a 22-year-old activist from Manila when she was killed during a clash between suspected members of the New People’s Army and government troops.

Antonio Parlade Jr. is the spokesperson of the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict, and commander of the Southern Luzon Command of the Philippine Army.

Parlade also warned 2018 Miss Universe Catriona Gray to not get involved with rights groups.

Several Filipino lawmakers slammed Parlade for his “unacceptable threats,” reports the Inquirer.

“Your threats and harassment are unacceptable,” Senator Risa Hontiveros said. “By silencing them, you are condoning violence and abuse being experienced by Filipinos. This is a shame to your rank and to the [Philippine Military Academy.]”

While Gabriela Women’s Party-list Rep. Arlene Brosas chided Parlade for “mansplaining.”

“It is clear that Parlade, the NTF-ELCAC, and the paid trolls are the ones who are rabidly red-tagging Liza Soberano and other female celebrities and influencers who are taking a stand and speaking out against the macho-fascism under the Duterte regime,” Brosas said. “How come these macho-fascists have the audacity to mansplain strong women and lecture them on what to do? And why do they seem so afraid of women using their platform to defend other women?”
