Zhao becomes only the second woman to win an Oscar in the category behind Katheryn Bigelow who won for the “Hurt Locker.” The Chinese filmmaker won for “Nomadland” which is her third feature-length movie. She beat out Aaron Sorkin, David Fincher, Thomas Vinterberg, and Emerald Fennell.

She’s the second Asian to win in the category behind Japanese American Miyoshi Umeki who won for Sayonara in 1958, according to NPR.
