Awkwafina has added another movie to her already full plate. She is set to star in “The Baccarat Machine,” the real-life story of the world’s most successful female gambler Cheung Yin “Kelly” Sun, reports Deadline. Awkwafina will once again work with SK Global who produced “Crazy Rich Asians,” the movie that catapulted Awkwafina into superstardom.
“We can’t think of a better way to start this project than by announcing that our friend Awkwafina has come on board,” John Penotti, the CEO of SKG said. “She is uniquely equipped to bring Kelly to life onscreen and will infuse the role with genuine humor and humanity. Along with our partners at Sharp, we’re thrilled to bring this unbelievable story to the screen.”
Cheung Yin “Kelly” Sun made a name for herself by working with legendary gambler Phil Ivey. The two won tens of millions of dollars from casinos around the world after she figured out how to beat baccarat.
“Phil did not want me eating or sleeping,” she told 888 Casino. “He only wanted me to be playing. That’s why I was called Baccarat Machine. One time we played 24 hours.”
“The Baccarat Machine” is based on an article written by Michael Kaplan and published by Cigar Aficionado.
The script is being written by Andy Bellin and a director will be named in the future.
Awkwafina’s career has skyrocketed ever since “Crazy Rich Asians.” She has won a Golden Globe for “The Farewell,” she has her own television show “Awkwafina is Nora from Queens,” and she’s going to appear in the Marvel movie “Shang-Chi.”
