Awkwafina to star in Disney’s “Raya and the Last Dragon”

Awkwafina has scored another job at Disney. At the fan expo D23, Disney announced their new animated movie “Raya and the Last Dragon” starring Cassie Steele as Raya and Awkwafina as Susi the dragon, reports EW. The screenplay is written by “Crazy Rich Asians” writer Adele Lim and directed by “Frozen” helmer Paul Briggs and Dean Wellins.

The Southeast Asian-inspired movie takes place in the fictional world of Kumandra. Osnat Shurer, a producer on the film described it as “a reimagined earth inhabited by an ancient civilization that venerated the mythical dragons for their power and their wisdom. It’s inspired by Southeast Asia, both in its themes of community and hope and in its design.”

In Kumandra, the warrior Raya, described as a “five-star bad-ass,” teams up with a crew of misfits to find the last dragon to save her world. This proves to be a difficult task because dragons have disappeared after Kumandra was invaded by a “dark, sinister force.”

“Our world was created by dragons, before they left they hid a gift for the people,” the voiceover said during the presentation, reports Deadline. “A powerful but dangerous gift. One that could save an entire kingdom or bring it to an end. The question is what will we find? Hope or destruction.”

After they showed a three-minute clip, Awkwafina got on stage and said, “That’s me up there. I look good, right? I like the hair. I look splendiferous.”

This makes three jobs for Awkwafina at Disney. Awkwafina will also be Scuttle in the live-action remake of “The Little Mermaid” and she has a mysterious role in the upcoming Marvel’s movie “Shang-Chi.”

Cassie Steele is a Canadian actress of Filipino descent who is best known for her role in “Degrassi: The Next Generation.”

“Raya and the Last Dragon” will be released on November 25, 2020.
