An Asian mother was violently assaulted at the Ontario Mills Mall in San Bernardino, California on Sunday, April 4th by two assailants. According to Fox 11 News Los Angeles, police arrested 34-year-old Tuvorius Mencer in connection to the crime.
The incident started in the Timberland store when an Asian couple with a baby got into an argument with two men about social distancing. It is unclear what either side said at this point.
The verbal argument turned violent when the two men allegedly attacked the Asian woman. The Asian man with the victim was holding a baby during this time. A bystander tried intervening but ended up also getting attacked, according to a witness
The witness, Louis Navarro told Fox 11 News, “I was walking down the corridor and then I noticed there was a disturbance about 50 feet in front of me and as I looked up, I noticed there were two black gentlemen striking an Asian female where she landed on the ground and I saw her holding the left side of her face. At that moment, I noticed there was an innocent bystander that was attempting to render aid to her, he then became assaulted and fell on the ground where they attacked him.”
Navarro said the assailants then walked past him and he heard them make “derogatory remarks” about the couple being Asian.
“The two gentlemen then walked past me as I heard them using several profanity and derogatory remarks. The remarks that were made, obvious to me, make it seem more of a hate crime,” Navarro said.
The victim was wheeled out on a stretcher. Police arrested Tuvorius Mencer at the mall but the other suspect got away. Mencer was booked for a felony assault on a couple, a hate crime, and assaulting a peace officer.
Update – The second suspect has been arrested, reports KTLA 5. 31-year-old Terrell Plaines was arrested at his Hemet home “on suspicion of violation of civil rights and felony assault.”
