An Asian mother and her daughter were found stabbed to death inside their Rancho Cucamonga, California, home over the weekend. Police found Jia Jia, 44, and her daughter Ruby Meng, 8, dead on Sunday around 3 am after responding to “an unknown problem” call at the 6800 block of Bergano Place, reports KTLA. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said there was a third victim, the mother’s friend, who was also stabbed, reports the Mercury News. The 38-year-old was rushed to the hospital and is expected to recover.
Authorities believe the assailant entered the home and stabbed the three victims while they were sleeping. The assailant then left through the back door. It is unclear how the suspect entered the home.
The police pronounced Jia Jia and Ruby Meng dead at the scene.
Two other family members were in the home asleep at the time but they were not hurt. According to an anonymous family friend who spoke with KTLA, the two other family members were the husband and the grandmother. The victims were sleeping in one room while the husband and grandmother were sleeping elsewhere. The father and grandmother are not considered suspects.
The friend said she had dinner with the family earlier that day and she said “everything and everyone seemed fine.”
The police searched the area but could not find the attacker.
The victims were Chinese immigrants who spoke little English. They moved into the area a few years ago. The friend said nobody has any idea why they were attacked.
Police have not released any information about the suspect or motive for the crime. The assailant is on the loose and the police are asking anyone with information to come forward.
