Asian man and woman shot to death in Monterey Park restaurant

An Asian man and an Asian woman were murdered at a Monterey Park, California restaurant on Monday, April 5th reports KTLA. The two victims were shot to death inside the Music BBQ Bar in the 500 block of West Garvey Avenue around 6:30 pm. Police found the two victims suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in the upper body. They were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities described the gunman as an Asian male in his 30s to early 40s.

The suspect walked inside the Music BBQ Bar through the front door and opened fire. A witness told KTLA that he heard around six initial shots followed by a break then another six to eight shots. The suspect then ran out of the restaurant through the front door and took off in his Toyota Rav 4.

The Asian male victim has been identified as 37-year-old Zhaiming Li of Pomona. The identity of the Asian woman will not be released until the next of kin has been notified.

Authorities said the victims were targeted by the gunman. According to Lt. Charles Calderaro, the suspect and the victims knew each other and the gunman might have had a relationship with the Asian woman.

“It appears the suspect knew and specifically targeted the victims,” the Sheriff’s Department said. “This incident does not appear to be a random act of violence.”

Update – 4/8/21 – Police arrested the alleged gunman Jing Yixin, 38. Authorities believe he is the husband to the female victim who has been identified as 36-year-old Ling Ling Wang.
