A 70-year-old Latina was severely beaten while on the Metro Bus in Eagle Rock, California on Friday, April 9th after she was mistaken for being Asian, reports The Eastsider. The woman identified as Becky was heading to Vons market to shop for her granddaughter when she was attacked. She was ready to get off the 81 bus at La Loma Road and Figueroa Street when the assailant described as a black woman aged 25-30 called her a racial epithet used against Chinese people, according to the victim’s son.
The insult turned into violence when the assailant attacked the victim. The assailant dragged the victim from the back of the bus to the front. Nobody intervened including the bus driver. The attack only stopped after someone called 911.
“Nobody would help,” the son said. “Not even the bus driver.” The son said they live in Highland Park and are often mistaken for Asian.
The victim suffered from a concussion, a broken nose, swollen and bruised eyes, and her hair was pulled out. She was taken to the hospital and released the next day. However, she’s having trouble walking and the beating exacerbated her lupus and other disabilities.
Police arrested the suspect shortly after on another bus. However, authorities have not released much information about the suspect.
Update – 4/15/21 – The suspect has been named as 23-year-old Yasmine Beasley, reports KTLA. Her bail was set at $50,000.
